Small pig farmers are rethinking their marketing strategies. During the Covid-19 crisis many of them marketed their pigs in informal markets but many now believe that these strategies are not sustainable. Many of them are now marketing through abattoirs.

According to Johann Kotzé, CEO of SAPPO the Covid-19 pandemic has emphasised consumers’ need to be safe and healthy and in future they will expect higher safety and traceability standards from their food and food producers. The formal market will provided greater peace of mind to consumers in this regard.

“I believe that SAPPO’s business development managers will in future have to play an important role to assist small farmers in formulating market strategies to market through the formal market.”

The South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) coordinates industry interventions and collaboratively manages risks in the value chain to enable the sustainability and profitability of pork producers in South Africa.
