Humane production: Lessons from Australia’s pig industry

Australia’s pig farmers encounter some very different challenges in maintaining good standards of welfare on farm, but RSPCA Australia feel that they haven’t yet got the recognition they deserve for the work they do.

Australia has made some significant welfare improvements over the last few years, particularly with industry voluntarily phasing out sow stalls and around 80 percent of sows now housed in groups.

However, Talulah Gaunt, RSPCA Australia Humane Food Marketing Officer, says there are still challenges that the Australian pig industry needs to address. Speaking to The Pig Site, Talulah says these challenges are critical but continuing the hard work that has already been done around pig welfare, and recognising that progress, will allow pig farmers to hit new welfare and productivity targets.
