Evonik and Monyetla: A working relationship empowering a developing farmer to reach success

Evonik Africa has a strong presence in the livestock sector in South Africa, supplying amino acids, probiotics, and other specialty nutrition additives into the swine industry. In 2020, Evonik Africa began eagerly looking for a developing enterprise to support as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Evonik Africa engaged with SAPPO and they jointly identified the capacity for Sincobile Piggery, located in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, to grow and develop. Sincobile has proven to be a resilient enterprise, having the production and managerial capacity to scale; therefore, Evonik and Monyetla Enterprise, through SAPPO, stepped in. At the time the project was initiated, the farm was operating on a five-sow scale.

SAPPO had been supporting Sincobile with financial advice and technical assistance under the business development mentorship programme. The transaction of funds from Evonik was administered through Monyetla Enterprise Development, a registered non-profit company (NPC) belonging to SAPPO. Aside from being a financial conduit, the combination of business development support and industry networking contributed to a successful outcome for both Evonik and Sincobile.

Following a financial commitment from Evonik and a needs analysis assessment, a plan was developed in collaboration with the farmer, Sincobile, and SAPPO on how best to utilise the approved funds. The financial contribution from Evonik was utilised for the purchase of breeding stock, feed, medicine, and other production inputs.

With the support from Evonik and Monyetla, Sincobile is now operating a successful 100-sow unit. The farm produces weaner pigs, marketed to both commercial and smaller out-grower farmers. Evonik and Monyetla’s relationship is destined to continue for 2024, and we look forward to being part of Sincobile’s future growth and success.
