SAPPO Board holds strategic meetings to shape the future of the pork industry

The South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) held two critical strategic meetings in February 2025 to discuss the future direction of the pork industry. The first meeting brought together key industry role players to address pressing matters that impact pork consumption, export opportunities, quality assurance, transparency, and transformation.

Driving pork consumption in South Africa

Globally, pork is the most consumed meat, yet there is potential for growth in South Africa. Discussions focused on refining SAPPO’s marketing strategy to educate consumers about the benefits of pork and increase local consumption. This involves targeted campaigns, improved consumer engagement, and collaboration with retailers and food service providers to position pork as a preferred protein source.

Enhancing export opportunities

The pork industry’s growth is closely tied to its ability to access international markets. Improving liaison with state veterinarians and streamlining the export permit negotiation process are critical steps toward accelerating export opportunities. SAPPO is committed to working closely with government authorities to ensure South African pork meets international standards, facilitating greater market access.

Commitment to ESG principles

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations remain a priority for SAPPO. Sustainability, animal welfare, and responsible farming practices are central to maintaining consumer trust and ensuring long-term industry viability. Strategies were discussed to align the pork industry with global ESG expectations while ensuring profitability and growth.

Ensuring pork quality

Maintaining and enhancing pork quality is non-negotiable. Discussions centred around best practices in production, processing, and distribution to guarantee that high standards are upheld. SAPPO recognises that consumer confidence in pork products is directly linked to the industry’s ability to deliver consistently high-quality meat.

Transparency through price reporting mechanisms

A transparent price reporting mechanism can drive fairness and accountability in the industry. The board explored the value of implementing such a system to provide producers, processors, and consumers with precise, real-time market information. This initiative aims to enhance decision-making and market efficiency.

Telling SAPPO’s transformation story

SAPPO’s transformation efforts are integral to the industry’s growth and inclusivity. However, these initiatives need greater visibility. The board emphasised the importance of effectively communicating SAPPO’s transformation journey, showcasing progress in empowering emerging farmers, creating opportunities, and fostering a more diverse industry.

A forward-thinking approach

The SAPPO board remains committed to driving the pork industry forward with a strategic, inclusive, and growth-oriented approach. These meetings set the stage for actionable plans to strengthen the sector, enhance competitiveness, and ensure a sustainable future for all stakeholders.

SAPPO will continue to engage with industry players, government bodies, and consumers to implement these strategies and reinforce the role of pork as a vital component of South Africa’s food security and agricultural economy.
