Enter now: The ENVARTO Pork Carcass Competition 2024

The Pork Carcass Competition, an annual event hosted by ENVARTO in collaboration with the South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC) and sponsored by the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO), stands as a beacon of excellence in the South African pork industry. By promoting the production of high-quality meat tailored to market demands, the competition serves as a platform to showcase the industry’s best while imparting invaluable knowledge. By demonstrating the classification system and its advantages to producers and highlighting that desired carcass characteristics are visible on live animals, the competition celebrates excellence and fosters continuous improvement within the industry.

The competition will run from April to June 2024 at various abattoirs across all nine provinces. The list of participating abattoirs will depend on the entries received, and specific dates for slaughtering will be confirmed once entries have been received and communicated directly with abattoirs and producers. Competition categories for single carcasses are:

  • Porkers: 20–55 kg
  • Cutters: 56–65 kg
  • Light baconers: 66–80 kg
  • Heavy baconers: 81–110 kg

Finalists will be announced in each category at each abattoir, and a national winner will be announced in August 2024 at the SAMIC annual Carcass Competition prize-giving function.
