World of Pork Animal Movement logger update

The animal movement logger is available to all World of Pork registered producers and is used to record movements of pigs between units, producers, and abattoirs. This tool strengthen its members’ ability to ensure consumers, stakeholders, and trade partners that South African pork products are safe to consume, ethically produced, and traceable throughout the value chain. The data captured enables backward- and forward-tracing during a disease outbreak, which enables faster resolution and better disease control.

Progress on pig movements for June 2024

During June this year, 421 animal movements were recorded thus far on the World of Pork Animal Movement Logger. Preliminary movement statistics for June 2024:

  • Total: 66 684 pigs.
  • To abattoirs: 52 112 pigs.
  • To other producers: 8 057 pigs.
  • Between production units: 6 515 pigs.

New farm standard for Pork 360

All producers on the World of Pork can register to participate in the movement logger. However, producers who form part of the Pork 360 certification scheme have to register movements in order to meet the new farm standard requirement of the Pork 360 certification scheme, which applies from this year. The register will also be audited annually in conjunction with Pork 360 audits.

The logger tracks three primary movement channels:

  1. From producer to abattoir: Mandatory for all movements destined for processing.
  2. From producer to producer: Facilitating transfers between different pig producers.
  3. From one production unit to another: Ensuring internal movements within the same business are documented.

Movements are categorised into quick or detailed movements, with the latter including additional regulatory information, aligning seamlessly with the Meat Safety Act (40 of 2000) and Livestock Theft Act (57 of 1959). This approach not only enhances regulatory compliance but also fortifies disease control measures by enabling swift and precise traceback capabilities.

Call to action

As the industry embraces digital transformation, the Pig Movement Logger stands as a testament to innovation driving sustainable practices. Moving forward, its role in bolstering biosecurity, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fortifying consumer confidence remains pivotal. With ongoing enhancements and adaptations, the future promises continued evolution towards a more resilient and transparent pork industry.
