SAPPO farmer Betty Nyambi (Sincobile Trading and Agriculture) on what it takes to be a farmer who produces pork.
Growing up living off the land in a farming community often leads one to embark on a career in agriculture. Betty Nyambi, a farmer who produces pork in Bronkhorstspruit, realised that the resources she was given to start her on the path to becoming a farmer came with great responsibility. She has, on many occasions, stared hard work in the face – for long hours at a time, and without it ever dissuading her. Betty has learned that working with the Earth, in a hands-on communion with nature and animals, is just as important as the business management side of things – financial planning, record-keeping, managing employee and customer relationships, and scaling your business as you grow. You have to be driven by passion and resilience in order to persevere, to have the fire in your that says, “Even though I will face challenges, I must never give up,” she says.
SAPPO is contributing to making agriculture more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and future-looking by working alongside farmers who produce pork across southern Africa.
