There are very few commercial pig producers in Uganda. Most of the pigs are kept by small-scale farmers and pig keepers.
ASF is a big problem with frequent outbreaks of the disease. In a lot of cases animals with the disease are moved or slaughtered and the pork sold. This makes it very difficult to contain or combat the disease.
The people are also complaining that there is little support from government when there is an outbreak. The availability of a vaccine will help a lot to combat the disease under these circumstances.
Ugandans eat pork regularly and they have a lot of pork joints, which are small little braai restaurants where pig carcasses are cut up and grilled over a fire.
The pig price is above R40/kg at the moment.
