SAPPO study groups: May 2025

For years, information-sharing days have been remarkable events that foster education and allow farmers to engage with various industry role players.  The Business Development division commenced with district study groups to continue to share industry knowledge and to keep farmers abreast with new developments. During May, the Free State, Gauteng, and Eastern Cape hosted study groups, attracting an average of 70 smallholder farmers. The events were hosted with the relevant provincial Department of Agriculture and district municipalities. Valuable information was shared on topics such as legal compliance regarding transportation of animals, environmental compliance, and water-use licenses. To ensure correct information was shared, engagements were led by speakers from the South African Police Service and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Following the recent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth-disease (FMD), the study groups were also used to inform and remind farmers of the dangers of FMD within the pig industry. Presented by the state veterinarian, farmers were urged to maintain sound biosecurity measures irrespective of suspected cases, reiterating the importance of using registered, effective disinfectants. Technical topics and funding opportunities from various financial institutions were also discussed. Thank you to all the presenters, organisers, and attendees for making the sessions remarkable.

If you wish to participate in our upcoming study groups, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the provincial Business Development Manager for dates.
