The Agri SA Atlas Congress 2025, held in Pretoria on 16 October under the theme “Atlas for the Future of Agriculture”, proved to be a notable event for South African agriculture. Drawing over 800 stakeholders from across the sector, the congress spotlighted innovation, resilience, and collaboration – particularly within the pig industry.
Pig producers were celebrated as frontrunners in biosecurity innovation, with industry leaders showcasing proactive disease prevention strategies, advanced traceability systems, and a steadfast commitment to high health standards. These efforts have positioned the pork sector as a benchmark for other livestock industries navigating the challenges of disease outbreaks and food security.
Among the producers highlighted were Alzu Piggeries and Topigs Norsvin, who presented a comprehensive overview of best biosecurity practices – both on-farm and beyond the farm gate. Their protocols were especially relevant in light of recent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza, which continue to threaten national food security and export credibility. The pig industry’s robust systems were showcased as a model of resilience and preparedness.
This recognition not only elevates the sector’s reputation but also paves the way for increased support, investment, and policy alignment.
Another key theme of the congress was the growing impact of misinformation on consumer perceptions and policy decisions. Agri SA used the platform to reinforce its strategic shift toward becoming a trusted, science-based source of information for all stakeholders. For pig producers, this translates into stronger advocacy, clearer communication, and more effective representation in national debates on food security, animal welfare, and trade.
In line with this vision, the South African Pork Producers Organisation (SAPPO) rejoined Agri SA earlier this year. SAPPO sees significant value in Agri SA’s role as a central hub for data consolidation – data that can inform multi-sectoral policy and business discussions. It was encouraging to see Agri SA building its value proposition around this strategic approach.
