Shaping pork pros: Smokehouse staff lead the way

Through the SA Pork brand, the Consumer Education division continues to champion pork’s flavour, versatility, and value, ensuring consumers and retailers alike gain confidence in their pork choices. Each initiative is designed to build awareness of pork’s quality and safety, inspire new cooking occasions, and provide clear, myth-busting education on how pork is produced and prepared in South Africa. This season, those objectives came to life in an exciting new partnership with Smokehouse Foods.

A first staff quiz that set a new approach to training

Smokehouse recently participated in SAPPO’s first-ever staff quiz, supported by customised training material and a pork-knowledge game developed for frontline retail teams. Although both teams were navigating the format for the first time, the response exceeded expectations.

Staff jumped into the activity with enthusiasm, debating answers, sharing stories, and even continuing discussions into their lunch breaks. The engagement was genuine, energetic, and, most importantly, rooted in curiosity about pork. By the end of the session, staff were already asking when the next quiz would take place, a clear sign of the experience’s impact. Smokehouse expressed sincere appreciation for SAPPO’s support and described the event as both motivating and memorable for their team.

Building confidence, expertise, and better customer conversations

This initiative forms part of a broader effort to support retailers in growing sales of fresh pork cuts. By equipping staff with strong product knowledge and practical cooking ideas, we aim to help retailers spark more confident conversations at the counter and ultimately inspire customers to choose pork more often.

Elements of the programme include:

  • SA Pork Interactive Game App featuring pork facts, cooking tips, and myth-busting content.
  • Internal competitions where staff compete for top quiz scores, with prizes for high performers.
  • Quick training modules with mobile-friendly lessons and printable guides on:
    • Pork’s nutritional benefits
    • Safe handling and cooking
    • Recipe inspiration
    • Myth-busting facts to address common customer concerns

Bringing the brand in-store: Retail kit roll-out

To strengthen customer engagement, Smokehouse also received a customised SA Pork Retail Kit containing:

  • Pork facts posters for butchery counters
  • Recipe posters with QR links to SA Pork recipes
  • A full suite of point-of-sale material, including stickers, shelf-talkers, bunting, wobblers, and more

These materials help reinforce pork’s value and versatility at the exact point where purchasing decisions are made.

Growing a network of skilled pork ambassadors
