Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research done

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has obtained approval to do research into AMR as part of South Africa One Health Approach.

The SAPPO board at its recent meeting discussed the request for pig farmers’ to participate and was comfortable that the research would add valuable insight into the AMR situation on our farms. Participation is voluntary. Please approach your veterinary consultant should you need more information and would like to partake (or Dr Peter Evans at SAPPO).

“Having knowledge and information about any issue that may affect our industry allows us to be pro-active in finding solutions. An additional advantage is that we could counter sensationalistic inaccurate reports in the media such as the recent Hepatitis E virus articles,” Dr Evans says.

The South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) coordinates industry interventions and collaboratively manages risks in the value chain to enable the sustainability and profitability of pork producers in South Africa.
