Johann Kotzé, CEO of SAPPO, visited Vietnam and Indonesia the past weeks to explore export opportunities.
“Yes, there are export possibilities for us, but it is a complicated process and bilateral trade agreements and negotiations play a huge role. Exports can’t happen overnight. SAPPO’s application for exports to China and Vietnam are however already at the South African authorities.
Kotzé says countries already exporting to China have an advantage as they already have market access. It is easier for them to simply increase the amount of pork they are already exporting to the country. “ASF has changed the game and totally disrupted the protein market. Producers all over the world will have to contribute to fill the gap in the pork market in the East, especially in the Chinese market. It created opportunities for all.”
