Food export restrictions tied to COVID-19 are not consistent with known science of transmission, emphasized U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn in a joint statement Wednesday.
“There is no evidence that people can contract COVID-19 from food or from food packaging. The U.S. food safety system, overseen by our agencies, is the global leader in ensuring the safety of our food products, including product for export,” the statement said.
The statement comes after China’s customs authority reportedly suspended imports of poultry products from a plant owned by Tyson Inc. that has been hit COVID-19, Reuters reported.
