China to shut down small slaughterhouses to control ASF

China is shutting down some small slaughterhouses throughout the country in an effort to better prevent and control the devastating African swine fever (ASF) virus sweeping through the region. 

On Tuesday, China’s agriculture ministry said it will reduce the number of small-scale slaughterhouses to slow ASF spread.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in a statement on its website that there are too many small slaughterhouses in some places in China, equipped with old facilities and backward production techniques, Reuters reports.

Because of this, checks on pork quality are often not done properly, the article said.
