Robot feeds pigs while playing classical music
Classical music can positively influence pig performance – so much was known. A feeding robot has been developed in Brazil, playing exactly those tunes.
Roboagro, based in Caxias do Sul city, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, developed a robot capable of both feeding pigs and generating savings of €4 200 per year for each batch
of 1 000 animals in more than 500 farms in southern Brazil. The robot plays classical music and uses linear feeders, where the animals are divided in pens in order to receive the exact amount of feed for each meal during the day.
Studies published in 2016 showed best results for this type of distribution in relation to “at ease” feeders. Another benefit is the possibility to reduce the number
of animals per pen, influencing positively meat quality and herd management.
The technology, called “pig farming 4.0”, reduces labour costs and improves meat quality due to better animal welfare, in addition to bringing benefits to the quality of life of farmers. The system feeds the pigs using a predetermined schedule and realises adjustments real-time according to consumption, with a minimum level of human contact. At crossroads: Where does the USA pork industry go next?
Is the US pork industry at a crossroads? Mark Greenwood,
chief diversified markets officer
at Compeer Financial, admits he doesn’t know. But there’s no doubt, especially after this year, that everyone is thinking about which direction we should go moving forward as an industry.
Big questions hang heavy in the air. Are we too efficient? What is the right number of sows to have in production? Where did all the hogs go this year?
During the Allen D Leman Swine Conference, Greenwood took a stab at answering some of these hard questions and shared some of his thoughts on what’s ahead.
As more and more larger pork production systems approach close to or over 30 pigs per sow per year, there’s no question US pork production is highly efficient. But maybe it’s too good?
“When I look at just the overall numbers going forward, we have
6.3 million sows in the US. How many
do we actually need? My plain and simple answer is not 6.3 million,” Greenwood said.
It’s important to consider what happens to the US pork supply when production continually rises.
“We’re getting the pigs harvested. But if you talk to anybody on the processing side, we’re not getting further processing done,” he said.
“We’re still short on labour. On the processing side, we’re not extrapolating full value on those pigs.”
The industry has done a marvelous job when it comes to production management, he added. But he challenges producers to think differently about how to improve it going forward.

Germany: 300 million euros for improved animal welfare
Germany’s economic stimulus package for 2020 and 2021 will allocate a
total of 300 million euros for barn remodeling that promotes greater animal welfare. Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, has worked to secure this funding, which will be implemented through
a federal program. The Federal Minister is now presenting the funding guidelines. Sow farms in Germany can now apply for a subsidy for the implementation of the new requirements for sow keeping – under the following conditions: The maximum limit is 500 000 euros per farm and investment project. The construction project must not involve an increase in the number of animals. The project must be completed by the end of 2021.
